Calico Electronico

Calico Electronico, a super-hero spoof cartoon, is probably the most succesful series of "flash" animation in the Spanish industry. It has a very peculiar sense of humour, and a great number of fans eagerly awaiting the next episode's release. Best of all it's free to watch over the internet; and lately releasing a lot of merch (DVDs, games, comic-books...) to help support its production.
The series was originally produced as a marketing device to promote the store
ElectronicaWeb. In most episodes, the Spanish superhero usually ends up going to this store to get his gadgets. Only with these high quality
ElectronicaWeb gadgets could the superpowerless Calico ever hope to overcome the supervillains.
After the success of the series, the plot started to get a bit more "complex" and the characters created in previous episodes began to appear frequently. Lots of references to films and comics, even classical cartoons, are usually present, and the short episodes (at around 5 to 6 minutes long) never ceased to entertain.
According to
Nikodemo, the father of Calico, its popularity is due mainly on the amazing voice work of its actors. Add to that funny scripts, simple but high quality animations, and a dash of some light "spicy" content (more than occassional swearing is a trademark here) and you have their recipe to success. Another common feature since episode one is the out-takes we watch at the end of each episode, which are often funnier than the actual episode. Even a spin-off (Calico's orphans) has given
Nikodemo and his team (
Nikodemo Animations) a richer terrain to further explore the depths of the parodied superhero.
Its success has extended beyond Spanish boundaries, dubbing most of its seasons 1 and 2 episodes into English.
